1000+ Ancient Coins Project

Project Description

Photography of 1073 coins for the Yale University Art Gallery. Project took place on location at the site of coin storage. Coins were removed from the vault one tray at a time and photographed grouped by size. Approximately 67 coins per day were photographed as an average over 16 days on site. Images were captured with a hi-resolution Phaseone medium format digital back and Hasselblad optics. The average finished file size (obverse and reverse together without measure or color checker) was 205mb @ 300ppi. Coins were effectively magnified for possible reproduction to 17 to 28 cm @ 300ppi. This means coins, depending on original object size, were captured at high enough resolution to reproduce in print from 17 to 28cm across. The total delivered full resolution Tiff files with scale and color checker bar was 270GB of data.
