American Miniature Portraits

This project page showcases a selection from 38 Miniature Portraits photographed for the Yale University Art Gallery.
These objects are mostly paintings on ivory waifers encased and adorned in locket style cases.
The paintings range from about 1.5" to 3" tall. 
Some of the cases incorporate hair as momento and design from the sitter (or the deceased).
Miniature portraits were commissioned to commemorate births, engagements, marriages, deaths, and journeys.
